Baby, it’s cold outside!  But that’s not an excuse for not getting out there!

Super MAGFest at National Harbor:

“MAGFest” is short for “Music and Gaming Festival,” and games are what you’ll find at the Gaylord around the clock, all weekend: 200 arcade and pinball machines (all set for free play, of course), video-game tournaments and tabletop games ranging from Dungeons & Dragons to the newest indie creations. Take a break at panel discussions and video-game film screenings, watch live video-game-inspired improv comedy and theater or learn how to be a circus performer  Go here for more info.

HOT IN HERRE: 2000S DANCE PARTY WITH DJS WILL EASTMAN AND OZKER

If you’ve seen Will Eastman and Ozker DJ together before you know they have no guilt about musical guilty pleasures. Neither do you. Don’t even deny it. Since 2008, the duo has brought you the NO SCRUBS: 90’s Dance Party where 2Pac and Kurt Cobain exist side by side and work the sold-out 9:30 Club in Washington, DC into a sweaty mass of anthemic all night sing-alongs. Now it’s time to bring back HOT IN HERRE: 2000’s dance party. This Saturday at the 9:30 Club

Bier Baron Cask Festival:

To celebrate its seventh anniversary, the Bier Baron bar is hosting what it hopes will become an annual festival of cask ales from across the country. (Cask ale is a traditional style in which the beer undergoes a secondary fermentation in a serving vessel, adding natural carbonation.) National participants include some of the buzziest names in craft beer — Toppling Goliath, SingleCut and Interboro — while 3 Stars, Adroit Theory and Mad Fox are among those representing the Washington area. Admission includes a five-ounce sample of at least 21 beers and a souvenir tasting glass.  Go here for more info.

Elvis’ Birthday Fight Club at GALA Hispanic Theatre:

The surreal “fight club” features no-holds-barred brawls so comical and choreographed they would put the WWE to shame. This year’s matchups are a secret, but previous bouts have included Vladimir Putin vs. a unicorn, Martha Stewart vs. the Swedish Chef, and Redskins owner Daniel Snyder vs. a Native American. The King himself and burlesque star Trixie Glitter provide commentary on the action. In between rounds, there are burlesque performances, audience trivia contests and other surprises. Through Saturday.

Now is the best time to visit Mount Vernon

Winter is definitely the best time to visit Mount Vernon

Everyone knows George Washington’s Mount Vernon is gorgeous. The views are sweeping, the grounds are picturesque and the estate is laden with history. However, there’s no shortage of crowds when the weather is nice – putting on the pressure to hustle through exhibits. Fortunately for those of us who like to stroll leisurely, Mount Vernon is a lot less busy in the winter months and there’s no shortage of entertainment options. On December 8,9 and 17, you can check out Mount Vernon by candlelight during a special evening tour. If you want a fun option for kids, Mount Vernon will also have fireworks over the Potomac River on December 15 and 16.

Top 7 Places To Lace Up Those Skates

Places To Lace Up Those Skates

With the weather turning colder, it is time to bundle up and hit the great outdoors!

Hitting the rink is one of the season’s greatest outdoor activities. Fortunately for you, there’s no need to go in search of frozen ponds in order to get your skating fix. You can skate the day away in the middle of Tysons or bust a move surrounded by the beautiful and lively streets of Reston Town Center. Or, if you find yourself in downtown Washington, DC or other areas in Northern Virginia and Maryland, you can choose from a number of fun and picturesque outdoor ice rinks. Check out our list below and get to work on those triple axels!

Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion is open seasonally from early November to mid-March, offering public skating every day and extended hours for all holidays. The skate shop is stocked with over 500 pairs of skates ranging from size 8 toddler through men’s size 13, in both Figure and Hockey styles. For the beginner skaters, try the double bladed, flat edge skates to walk across the ice until you’re ready to glide into a single bladed skate, available in size Youth 8-13. Pentagon Row’s 6,840 square foot ice rink is now the largest outdoor rink in Northern Virginia, and the second largest in the state.

Open mid-November through spring. Located on the National Mall between 7th and 9th Streets along Constitution Avenue NW, the Ice Rink is a favorite Washington destination, attracting thousands of visitors to skate in the nation’s capital. The experience of skating in the Sculpture Garden, surrounded by the grand architecture of national museums and monuments, is enhanced by splendid views of large-scale sculptures by modern and contemporary artists including Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Roxy Paine, Tony Smith, and others from the Gallery’s renowned collection.
